autumn, summer, walks

A soft rain falls today, but last night’s walk was under a canopy of clear blue sky, and a chorus of a thousand birds. The setting sun kissed the tips of the corn before dropping out of sight. Never mind that it’s only mid-August, the smell of autumn was on the cool breeze.

The dog and I set out on our walk, happy for a cool night. Overhead, the clouds feathered in gray and white wisps.

Garden, lavender, summer

A week of soaking rain has ended with a cool breezy day. I harvested the lavender and and tied it into bundles to give away. Now the scent drifts around the house and lingers on my hands.

Garden, summer

It’s the season of lawn care;
the chorus of mowers drifts through the neighborhood. The rattle of an old push mower chewing on pine cones growls under the whine of a riding mower turning in a postage stamp lawn. Now and again a disembodied sneeze floats over the hedge.

The season’s first strawberries were picked this morning and offered up for sale at Brooklawn Farmer’s Market. It was a long cold winter we had, but some things are worth waiting for!

fall, rest, summer, vacation

Today I snuck a rare day off work, on a random Thursday, because despite the mountain of work that always threatens to bury me, there was nothing that couldn’t wait one more day. It was a perfect day to be off, dawning crisp and cold like autumn even though it’s only August.

20130815-220458.jpg
I had a lazy tour around the farmer’s market and was delighted to find the season’s first apples, smelling like orchards and fall.

20130815-220623.jpg
I brought my treasures home, and supper was a veggie buffet, with sweet corn, sautéed zucchini, heirloom tomatoes with basil, and sweet watermelon.

20130815-221123.jpg
I ended my work-free day with a walk at dusk, in the chill of the evening.

Cicadas and Sunsets

dog, Evening, summer, walks

The dog and I set out on our evening walk to the rhythm of a thousand cicadas. To the west, the sun was dropping below the tree line.

20130812-213524.jpg
To the east, the evening sky was blushing the palest pink.

20130812-213619.jpg
Fields of soybeans stretched lush and green.

20130812-213908.jpg
With a nod to autumn just around the corner, dried weeds spread a delicate lace against the sky.

20130812-214218.jpg
As darkness fell, we wandered home, and still the cicadas sang, and crickets joined the song.
