cardinals, nests, spring

The sky pencil holly didn’t weather the rough winter too well, yet despite the sparse and straggling branches,
a cardinal couple found it to be the perfect place to set up housekeeping, and are tending some pale speckled eggs. This morning through the branches dripping with rain I could just see the bright orange beak and black mask of a patient mama cardinal.

A Blustery Day For Planting

Garden, spring

If I stood with my face to the wind and looked straight up at the clouds scudding across skies first blue, then gray, I would think it autumn. But the blooming redbud and unfurling dogwood blossoms say otherwise. So I fill my planters with young spring plants. Soon enough they will crowd each other and spill over the edge, in the sweltering heat.

snow, spring, Winter

Snow drifts by the window and I lean against the radiator, sipping hot cocoa before bed. What joke is this, you ask? The Ides of March have long since passed. April Fool’s is close , so close that one might think today’s the day. But no, just one departing kiss of winter as she leaves the house of Spring.

Powered sugar snow on the snowdrops,
one last curtain call for winter

Hidden Treasures

Even after eight years of gardening
Our half-acre of land
I still come across hidden treasures
Tucked in overgrown nooks and crannies
By the previous owners who gardened here
For over 60 years.

How does your garden grow?

Sore muscles and sunburned arms
Are worth the satisfaction
Of weeded beds and layered mulch;
Colorful blooms and splashes of
lime green grasses and cool blue hostas in the shade of new leaves on the trees.

Tulips from my yard were
Closed tight against the spring frost
When I picked them this morning.
Now in the warmth
Their faces open big as plates
and turn toward me
Like eager children.

The two of us and the dog
Walk homeward at dusk.

gratitude, Lent, spring, Winter

Only once this winter
was the yard blanketed with snow,
On All Saint’s Eve.
I miss the muffled softness of deep peaceful drifts.
But in this strange winter that wasn’t,
Snowdrops will have to do.
