A Blustery Day For Planting

If I stood with my face to the wind and looked straight up at the clouds scudding across skies first blue, then gray, I would think it autumn. But the blooming redbud and unfurling dogwood blossoms say otherwise. So I fill my planters with young spring plants. Soon enough they will crowd each other and spill over the edge, in the sweltering heat.

A Treasure Trove

Today Ken and I took a trek to one of our favorite haunts, Baldwin’s Book Barn in West Chester, PA. We took the scenic route down 340 through rolling hills and farms, and finally suburbia until we came upon Baldwin’s –five stories of a stone Pennsylvania barn crammed full of books. And a few cats.

20140405-220644.jpg The barn is a labyrinth of narrow wooden staircases, and as you climb from floor to floor you come across nooks and crannies, chairs in corners and more sections behind closed doors. With each level the walls get progressively thinner, and on winter days the wind whistles through on the upper floors.

Only the closing of the store pulls us away from the shelves with our treasures. For Ken, an assortment of history books. For me, some murder and mayhem, a spy book or two and a tale of a lobster boat. Time for some Sunday afternoon reads!

Surprise!

Snow drifts by the window and I lean against the radiator, sipping hot cocoa before bed. What joke is this, you ask? The Ides of March have long since passed. April Fool’s is close , so close that one might think today’s the day. But no, just one departing kiss of winter as she leaves the house of Spring.

Everyone Showed up Except Summer

The day came on like spring, too warm for coats, but skipped over summer. By rush hour we were well into fierce autumn skies and the kind of torrential rain that whips the last of the leaves off the trees, except that the leaves have been off for months now. By the time the dog and I made a last trip outside, winter had shown up in full force. The sky sparkled with stars and the temperature plummeted down, down, down. We headed inside and off to bed to listen to the shutters rattle and the wind howl around the corner of the house.
