It’s the season of lawn care;
the chorus of mowers drifts through the neighborhood. The rattle of an old push mower chewing on pine cones growls under the whine of a riding mower turning in a postage stamp lawn. Now and again a disembodied sneeze floats over the hedge.

If you stand very still in the yard,
you can hear the quiet hiss
of the first layer of fresh snow falling on frozen ground.
Overhead, branches spread stark patterns across a sky heavy with the promise of hours of snowfall. By daybreak all will be muffled and still.
